Massachusetts Twisters owner Paul LaPointe announced this morning that Everson Maciel, one of the top players in the United Soccer League’s Second Division will be signing with the Twisters on October 2nd.
A native of Londrina, Brazil, Maciel quickly made his mark in his first foray in American soccer when he played at Quinnipiac College. In 2001, his junior year, Maciel led the Bobcats in scoring with 17 goals and 38 assists. That year, he was named the Northeast Conference’s Player of the Year as well as being selected as a member of the NEC’s All-Conference team. His school also honored him when he was awarded the 2001 Quinnipiac Male Athlete of the Year. One of his teammates with the Bobcats was current Quinnipiac and Twisters coach Eric DaSilva.
Once leaving college, Maciel spent played with several clubs in the New England area including Connecticut Academica of the Premier Arena Soccer League. In 2004, after a strong showing in the PASL All-Star Game in St. Louis, he was signed by the Cleveland Force of the MISL on a short term contract. Unfortunately, he was not able to truly showcase his skills and did not score any points.
Outdoors, he spent the last three seasons with the Western Massachusetts Pioneers of the USL. In all three seasons Everson was named to the USL Second Division’s All-League Team. All time with the Pioneers, Maciel has scored 13 goals and added 7 assists in 52 regular season games.
The Twisters will open their 2006-07 campaign on December 2nd, when they travel to Cincinnati to take on the 2005-06 champion Excite. They will open the home portion of the schedule on December 16th when they will host the New York Empire at the Eastern States Coliseum.
