Twisters Cap Off Tenth Anniversary Season With Berth in Championship Game
| | | | | As their 2006-07 season comes to a close, the Massachusetts Twisters are standing on the doorstep of someplace that they have never been before, as they have clinched a berth in the 2007 American Indoor Soccer League Championship Game, to be played on March 31st.
The site for the game will be determined after the Twisters’ March 24th game against the Cincinnati Excite. Should the Twisters defeat the defending champion Excite at the Eastern States Coliseum, the Championship Game will be held at the “Big E”. Should they lose, the game will be played at the Indoor Sports Center, the home of the other finalist, the Rockford Thunder.
“Obviously, this is a fantastic honor for the Twisters to be able to play for our first title potentially in front of our home fans, “said club owner and founder Paul Lapointe. “But, more than that, it’s a tribute to those who have supported and played for us in our formative years. I had a feeling at the beginning of the season that our tenth anniversary had the potential to be something special, and this proves it all out.”
For the first time in their four-year AISL history, the Twisters had depth in their offense. Forwards Everson Maciel and Jeff Deren might just be the best “one-two punch” in the league, combining for 35 of the team’s 83 total goals. Additionally, the brother duo of Tony and Franco Catiearra has been a real “find” for the team. Tony has scored a total of 13 goals, four of which are of the two-point variety, which gives him the league lead in that category.
First year ‘keeper Paul DelloStritto has played a big part of this year’s success as well. The acrobatic DelloStritto has backstopped the team in all seven wins so far, and is the AISL leader in minutes played, shots faced, and saves made.
Overall, the Twisters, led by AISL coach of the year candidate Eric Da Costa has played with a unity of purpose all season. Before the season, forward Jeff Deren said, “Anything less than a championship will be disappointing”. With that goal in sight, the dreams of the team and their fans are close to being realized.
The Twisters will play their final home game on March 24th, when they host the Cincinnati Excite at the Eastern States Coliseum, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30PM. Tickets are $10.00 for adults and $8.00 for children. They are available at the Coliseum box office on game night and through the team office at (413) 569-0088.
